Social Life

Socially, college is completely different from high school.  You have to deal with both a greater number of people and a greater diversity of people.  For me this semester, the greatest number of my friends have come from Blue Band and other students in the School of Music.  I have found that these are the people I connect best with and have the most in common with.  Also, these are the people I inevitably end up spending the most time with, in rehearsal and class.
While the idea of finding a whole new set of friends in college was daunting during the first few weeks, I have found that it is natural for people just to make friends and assimilate into an environment.  My closest friends at college I got to know just by talking with them about random things and having a good time.
As far as partying and going out goes, I have found it paramount to put academics before friends.  Although my friends do have the ability to draw me away from the practice room occasionally (or not so occasionally), I have found it key to always have academics in the back of my mind.  This way, I have been able to balance the time I spend with friends and the time I spend working to create an overall balanced lifestyle of work and fun.
