Musical Life

Music at Penn State has been completely different from any music I had experienced in my life before college.  Musicians at college are so motivated, so hardworking, and so talented in their areas.  This drive from students combined with the absolute expertise of the professors has produced a fantastic musical experience.  At Penn State, I have felt motivated to practice and improve more than ever before in my musical career.  The music making is on such a high level that one cannot help but strive to be as good as they possibly can.  Also, I have found that not only do I work harder, but I enjoy practicing and improving more than ever before.
The professor of tuba and euphonium at Penn State, Velvet Brown, has given me an entire new set of goals about how I approach and how I perform on the euphonium.  This semester, she and I decided it was time for me to do a full embouchure change, and to literally teach me the instrument over again from scratch.  While initially (and currently at times) this was very frustrating, it has changed both my appreciation for her fantastic teaching styles and my knowledge of how brass technique works.  Through this arduous change, I have learned volumes about what it takes to be a superior musician and an educator.
Outside of the euphonium studio, I have been involved in two other ensembles that have shaped me musically this semester, the first of these being the symphonic band.  I have found symphonic band this semester to be particularly rewarding through the opportunity to work with a fantastic conductor like Professor Glocke.  He has truly inspired me to be a better musician and a better teacher, and I cannot wait to work with him in future ensembles.  The other big driving musical force in my life this semester has been the Penn State Blue Band.  I am a member of the baritone section, and I have found both the friends I have made in the band and the musical experiences I have had to be extremely enriching to my development.  Click on the imeem.com player below to hear the Blue Band play Fight on State.
